Can you have a secret hair transplant without anyone knowing?

Hair transplants are becoming increasingly normal for men and women in the UK. But, most people, especially men who have one still don’t want to shout it from the rooftops. We get it! It’s completely understandable to want some privacy and see how the results go before spilling the beans at the pub to mates or at Christmas to family.

However, for many people, the anxiety of being found out can be a reason to procrastinate and delay.

Over the years, the team at Gro has seen thousands of people through their hair transplant journey. Here are some handy tips and tricks we’ve discovered on how to have a UK hair transplant without anyone knowing.

Choose the hair transplant technique wisely

Hair transplants have evolved over the years. There are two main hair transplant techniques on the market – Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT).

FUT is the older, less refined and less costly technique. FUT technique was designed to be faster for a doctor or technician to extract the hairs from the back of the head. It involves cutting out a strip of skin from the back of the head. The strip of skin and hairs are then divided into individual follicles, which are then transplanted to the treatment area. A long scar will be visible if the back of the head is cut short hair.

Sound yucky? We think so too!

While FUT is still offered by many hair transplantation clinics in the UK as a cheap hair transplant alternative, the good news is that hair transplant techniques have improved. FUE hair transplants have improved specifically on the extraction of hairs. From FUT where hairs are extracted in bulk by a flap of skin extracted to FUE where individual follicles are extracted one by one. The look can be completely natural and leave no scarring. For obvious reasons, this takes more time than FUT, but the method is much gentler on the scalp and requires no cutting, stitching and a faster recovery time.

When done by a quality hair transplant clinic, nobody (not even your barber or hairdresser) should be able to tell you’ve had an FUE hair transplant once you’ve recovered. Your friends, colleagues or family might comment that you look younger or look refreshed or simply ask if you changed your haircut…

Know what happens during recovery

While the final result of a well performed Micro-FUE hair transplant is not detectable, in the early days of recovery from a hair transplant it is obvious you have had some sort of procedure.

Many of our patients like to take time off, usually between 1-2 weeks after the procedure to rest and recover. Having said this, if you are not trying to keep this a secret, you can go back to work as early as two days post-surgery.

The first week of recovering from a hair transplant is when you will experience swelling, redness and scabbing in the implant area.

Gro give very detailed post-op care instructions so you know what to do to have the fastest recovery. If these instructions are followed then usually these visual effects will be significantly reduced within the first week and will disappear within two weeks. It must be said that each patient is different, some people heal faster or slower than others with some patients with certain skin types can experience redness on the scalp for up to 2-3 months which is normal. Gro offer LED light treatment to reduce this redness.

So, if you are doing this in secret then you will want to make sure that none of your family, friends or colleagues see you until the first 1-2 weeks of healing have occurred. Many patients have been able to work from home for the first month after surgery which gives them the perfect opportunity to recover in private.
